Other selection criteria

Description of experience in biodiversity: This BIP is primarily aimed at botanists conducting research and/or teaching activities related to plant morphology, systematic botany, biodiversity of plants and plant communities, and plant invasions. General ecology is also acceptable. Potential participants are asked to describe their experience in this regard.

DESCRIPTION

During this BIP, it is planned to visit the most interesting botanical sites in the Alentejo region, Portugal, to get to know the extraordinary flora of this area. In this way, researchers will expand their scientific and teaching competences. This BIP is primarily aimed at botanists conducting research and/or teaching activities related to plant morphology, systematic botany, biodiversity of plants and plant communities, and plant invasions. On this occasion, participants will also be able to familiarise themselves with and test the techniques of taking phytosociological relevés in the context of distinct types of biocenoses and plant communities, compared to Central European vegetation, with a particular emphasis on forest ecosystems, as the Alentejo region has the most extensive forest area in Portugal.

In addition, participants will be able to look at geographically alien plants, including invasive plant species, in the context of climate change. Based on this knowledge, they will recognise these issues and try to work out, discuss and address/define conservation issues together. While deepening practical skills/competences, participants will be able to become familiar with the directions of changes in the ecosystem/landscape (landscape alterations) and the human impact on the flora, plant communities, ecosystem and landscape. It will also be very important to get to know them with the local Natura 2000 habitats typical of the Alentejo region in the context of drawing attention to the most valuable components of protection of local nature. Based on the results obtained, the next editions of BIPs could have a more practical dimension and also be addressed to students.
