DESCRIPTION

This Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) focuses on the sustainable valorisation of food co-products originating from plant and animal sources, addressing one of the key challenges of the European agrifood system: the reduction of waste and the transition towards a circular bioeconomy. The programme integrates scientific, technological, economic and social perspectives, equipping students with interdisciplinary competencies needed to transform food by-products into valuable ingredients, materials and energy sources. The course combines online lectures, self-study modules and an intensive in-presence week including laboratory work, case studies and project development. Participants learn about new product development, sustainability principles, physicochemical and functional properties of co-products, emerging biotechnological valorisation techniques, innovation pathways and consumer-driven product development.
Through challenge-based learning, students work in interdisciplinary teams to design a mini-project including a valorisation concept, prototype idea or business model. The BIP strengthens collaboration among EU GREEN Alliance partners by supporting joint teaching activities, student mobility, and knowledge exchange in sustainable food innovation.
Ultimately, the programme aims to raise awareness of sustainability challenges, improve employability, and contribute to the development of a new European educational model in circular and responsible food systems.
