AF2000 Postnova – Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (AF4)

University of Angers · Nanomedicine

The AF2000 (Postnova Analytics) is an Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (AF4) system enabling separation and analysis of nanoparticles, macromolecules, or polymers based on hydrodynamic size; this stationary phase-free method preserves sample integrity with gentle separation in a thin channel; the system can be coupled with detectors (UV, MALS, DLS, RI) for highly precise online characterization (size, mass, conformation, absorbance, fluorescence), suitable for complex media or sensitive formulations; it also includes a preparative channel and fraction collector for producing purified fractions (~10 mg) at concentrations suitable for in vitro experiments (e.g., toxicity studies).

Agilent 5977B GC/MSD

University of Parma · Chemistry

The Agilent 5977B GC/MSD (Gas Chromatograph–Mass Selective Detector) is a high-sensitivity quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to a gas chromatograph, designed for the identification and quantification of organic compounds in complex mixtures. The system combines the separation power of gas chromatography (GC) with the specificity and sensitivity of mass spectrometry (MS), providing qualitative and quantitative data for a wide range of volatile and semi-volatile analytes. During analysis, sample components are first separated in the GC column, then ionized and fragmented in the mass spectrometer. The resulting ions are detected according to their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z), generating characteristic spectra that allow compound identification through comparison with spectral libraries (e.g., NIST, Wiley).

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a technique based on the detection of secondary X-rays produced following the electronic relaxation of elements previously excited by a primary X-ray source. Its main feature is that these secondary X-rays are characteristic of each element, a fact that enables elemental quantification of the sample under analysis. Furthermore, this technique is ‘non-destructive’ and in many cases allows for the analysis of both solid and liquid materials.

Micro Elemental Analyser and Macro Elemental Analyser.

University of Extremadura · Chemistry

The elemental analysis carries out quantitative analyses of solid, liquid and viscous samples, as well as filters, to determine the content of C (carbon), H (hydrogen), N (nitrogen), S (sulphur) and O (oxygen), expressed as a percentage by weight. Elemental analysis is mainly used in environmental research to determine the C, H, N and S content in soil, plant and water or air filter samples. The Service has an elemental micro-analyser, which allows the simultaneous determination of the percentage of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulphur in micro-samples (1 to 10 mg). The analysis technique is fully automated and is based on the complete combustion of the sample under optimal conditions (950 to 1100 °C and a pure oxygen atmosphere), to convert the aforementioned elements into simple gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water and sulphur dioxide), which are transported via a carrier gas to thermal conductivity detection (TCD) systems and highly selective infrared (IR) systems, thereby enabling the simultaneous determination of CHNS. In addition, a macro elemental analyser is available which allows the determination of nitrogen/protein, or carbon/nitrogen and sulphur percentages in samples that are typically heterogeneous, difficult to prepare or of low content, as it can analyse more than 3 grams of sample and the furnace temperature can reach up to 1450 °C, enabling the analysis of complex matrices.

TOF-SIMS.

University of Extremadura

TOF-SIMS The TOF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) technique is based on bombarding a surface with primary ions. The interaction of these ions with the surface releases a cloud of neutral elements, ions, ionic fragments, electrons or clusters of elements; by applying a potential difference, this allows the selective extraction of the ions or ionic fragments characteristic of the surface under analysis. Detection using time-of-flight mass spectrometry allows the analysis of everything from ions belonging to elements to ionic fragments constituting macromolecules. In this regard, the analysis of mass spectra provides information on the constituent elements of the surface, such as molecules anchored to that surface and even their anchoring arrangement on it. The available equipment allows for operation in both static and dynamic modes.

Wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) equipment. Model S8-TIGER, 4 kW

University of Extremadura

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a technique based on the detection of secondary X-rays produced following the electronic relaxation of elements previously excited by a primary X-ray source. Its main feature is that these secondary X-rays are characteristic of each element, a fact that enables elemental quantification of the sample under analysis. Furthermore, this technique is ‘non-destructive’ and in many cases allows for the analysis of both solid and liquid materials.

XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy)

University of Extremadura

XPS X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy involves directing X-rays of controlled energy onto the surface of a material. The interaction of these X-rays with the constituent atoms of the material’s outermost layers (effective penetration of between 2 and 10 nm) provides sufficient energy to eject electrons from the various atoms. These electrons leave the atoms with a characteristic kinetic energy that provides information on the type of atom (element) to which they belong and the types of atoms (elements) that may be interacting with the atom from which the electron originates.
