EU GREEN Alliance Unite for Sustainability Tree Planting

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is excited to announce a significant Tree Planting event set to take place across its campuses and in partnership with EU GREEN Alliance countries on Monday, October 14th, with additional plantings to follow on subsequent dates. This initiative is part of the #First5Weeks program and represents a collaborative effort with our EU GREEN Alliance partners.

As a powerful symbol of unity and sustainability, native trees will be planted across ATU campuses in sequences of nines, representing the nine countries in the EU GREEN Alliance—a dynamic network of universities committed to promoting sustainable education and research throughout Europe. Local primary schools are warmly invited to attend and participate, with events hosted on ATU’s campus grounds.

The other EU GREEN Alliance members will also participate in the tree planting initiative at different times. The University of Oradea and the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences will hold their events during the week of October 14th. Following them, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg will take part on October 21st as part of its ‘Progressive Introduction Weeks,’ while the University of Évora will conduct its planting on October 29th. The University of Parma will join the initiative on November 21st to celebrate the International Day of the Tree.

Due to seasonal considerations, the University of Angers will schedule its tree planting event for late November. Meanwhile, the University of Extremadura will host a symbolic event on October 14th, with a larger initiative planned for February, aiming to plant around 2,000 trees. Notably, the University of Gävle kicked off the effort early, holding its planting event on September 5th as part of the Sustainable Campus Day celebrations.

The aim of this initiative is to inspire future generations on the significance of environmental stewardship and to deepen the connection between local communities and the broader European sustainability movement. By engaging with primary school children, ATU shares knowledge on biodiversity and encourages citizen science, nurturing life-long environmental champions.

Professor Frances Lucy, EU GREEN Lead for ATU, stated enthusiastically: “This tree planting project highlights the importance of sustainability both locally and internationally. By bringing together our campuses and EU GREEN partners, we’re not just planting trees—we’re planting the seeds of environmental responsibility within our communities.”

The Tree Planting event embodies these values, demonstrating the strength of partnerships within the EU GREEN Alliance and furthering the collective mission of sustainability.
