The University of Évora proudly marks its 50th anniversary with a series of events that celebrate its rich history and forward-looking vision, in alignment with the objectives of the EU GREEN Alliance. As the only Portuguese member of this prestigious consortium, the University of Évora is at the forefront of promoting sustainable development and international collaboration in higher education.
The anniversary celebrations include the groundbreaking show “Five Centuries, 50 Years: a Remembrance of the University of Évora,” a transdisciplinary project that brings together various scientific fields such as History, Heritage, Architecture, Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Multimedia, Languages, and Literature. The innovative performance, which incorporates video mapping, music, and theatre, involves students, faculty, and non-teaching staff, showcasing the university’s commitment to blending tradition with innovation. A videographic record of this event will soon be released as part of the commemorative program.
The event not only commemorates the reestablishment of the University of Évora as a higher education institution but also serves as a testament to its dynamic role within the EU GREEN Alliance. This alliance, which includes nine universities from across Europe, aims to create a European hub for education, research, and innovation in sustainability. The consortium focuses on integrating the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its educational and research strategies, a mission that is deeply embedded in the anniversary activities of the University of Évora.
As part of the EU GREEN Alliance, the University of Évora recently hosted the first Research Week of the consortium, where over 100 researchers from nine countries came together to discuss strategies for developing the “University of the Future.” The event highlighted the collaborative efforts in six key research areas, including sustainable agriculture, environmental technology, and cultural heritage tourism, among others.
During the anniversary celebrations, the University of Évora also participated in workshops and sessions aimed at aligning curricular units with the SDGs and exploring the implementation of joint European degrees. These initiatives underscore the university’s role in fostering transnational cooperation and educational innovation within the EU GREEN framework.
Looking ahead, the University of Évora, in collaboration with its EU GREEN partners, plans to continue its efforts to integrate sustainability into all aspects of university life, from academic curricula to community engagement. This milestone anniversary not only reflects on the past achievements of the university but also sets the stage for its future contributions to a more sustainable and interconnected world.
