By embedding its Behavioural Change Label within the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Rating adopted across all nine partner universities, EUGREEN takes a major step in aligning institutional sustainability performance with real, measurable change on campuses, while ensuring global credibility.
Behavioural Change – A Sustainability Performance Driver
The Behavioural Change Label reflects a two-way, evidence-based dynamic between institutional strategy and campus action. On the one hand, it recognises how universities translate THE requirements into concrete behavioural change across teaching, operations, governance, and engagement. On the other, campus-level initiatives such as sustainability programmes, student and staff engagement actions, and behavioural interventions—generate the structured evidence required for THE reporting.

A Common Approach to Sustainability
Following a review of global assessment systems, the alliance selected THE Impact framework for its strong SDG alignment, global recognition, and inclusive methodology. The transition to Sustainability Impact Ratings from 2026 adds certified results, structured feedback, and benchmarking tools to support continuous improvement and collaboration.
All nine universities have committed to participation, with initial reporting focused on SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). This coordinated effort strengthens both comparability and the alliance’s shared identity.
Driving Impact and Visibility
Implementation has already improved governance, data management, and internal engagement, while fostering peer learning across institutions. By using a globally recognised framework, EU GREEN enhances transparency and visibility toward students, policymakers, and society. The initiative also supports the European Universities Initiative by demonstrating how transnational cooperation can deliver measurable contributions to global sustainability challenges.
Next Steps
EU GREEN will expand SDG reporting, deepen institutional integration of behavioural change initiatives, and use benchmarking insights to inform strategic development. Progress and results related to the Behavioural Change Label and THE Rating will be communicated via the EU GREEN website to ensure continued transparency, engagement, and shared learning.
