The city of Parma has been named European Youth Capital for 2027, a prestigious recognition awarded by the European Youth Forum. This honour celebrates the city’s strong collaboration between its local administration, youth community, a vast network of stakeholders and the University of Parma, member of EU GREEN Alliance.
The winning proposal, titled “Parma: A Great Square for Europe,” was the result of an extensive participatory process. The proposal promotes a collaborative and inclusive approach, aiming to create a long-term platform for dialogue and active participation between youth and society, extending beyond 2027. The bid, presented by the Municipality of Parma in partnership with JEP Junior Enterprise Parma, the Youth Commission of Parma, the National Youth Council, the University of Parma and many local, regional, and national organisations, reflects a collective effort to amplify youth engagement.
This designation as the European Youth Capital 2027 represents an exceptional opportunity for the University of Parma further solidifying its role as an institution committed to youth development, inclusion, and sustainability. For students at the University of Parma and across the EU GREEN Alliance, this recognition offers a unique chance to participate in and benefit from the numerous activities, projects, and events planned throughout the year 2027 in the city. These initiatives will not only foster personal and professional growth but also strengthen connections between educational institutions and local and European communities, promoting a model of inclusive and sustainable collaboration.
A Landmark Opportunity for Parma
This milestone allows Parma to showcase its socio-economic and cultural development centred on youth empowerment. The project is structured around eight thematic “Squares” and four “Paths,” designed to foster intergenerational connections, improve young people’s quality of life, and advance active participation, social inclusion, and sustainability. These “Squares” and “Paths” serve as both physical and symbolic spaces for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and action, driving a more inclusive and sustainable future for Parma and Europe.
A Square as a Symbol of Change
The concept draws inspiration from the traditional Italian piazza, historically a space for civic engagement, commerce, and cultural exchange. The metaphor extends to envision the city as a hub where diversity meets and transforms landscapes through shared experiences and democratic participation. By 2027, Parma aims to set an example for Europe, offering young people opportunities to shape their city as a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking community.
Parma is the second EU GREEN Alliance partner to be a 2027 Capital as Évora is going to be the European Capital of Culture. Also Cáceres (home of University of Extremadura) is also competing for capitality in 2031.
